2nd High-level International Conference on the International Decade for Action
“Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018-2028
06-09 June 2022 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Under the topic “Catalyzing water action and partnership at the local, national, regional and global levels”, the 2nd High-level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018-2028 will take place on 06th-09th June 2022 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It is considered an important global event in preparation for the United Nations 2023 Water Conference in New-York.
In this context, Hydro4U partner IWMI, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), Germany and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) are jointly organising the Interactive Session on “Accelerating the water-energy-food nexus in post-Covid recovery”. The session will be held on 08th June 2022, 11:30 – 13:00. Hydro4U project partners HSOL and TIIAME NRU, the leading academic institution from Uzbekistan, will be among the panelists.
About the Interactive Session “Accelerating the water-energy-food nexus in post-Covid recovery”
Agriculture is the largest user of the world’s freshwater resources, and more than one-quarter of the energy used globally is expended on food production and supply (FAO, 2019). Projections estimate that by 2050, more than 9 billion people will need to be fed, which will require a 60 percent increase in food production if the current production and consumption trends remain. Achieving the dramatic augmentations in food production will require additional water resources. Yet, water is also required to satisfy growing domestic, industrial and urban water demand. Energy demands, and water requirements embedded therein, are also increasing to support industrialisation and electrification. At the same time, the Covid-19 pandemic and increasing impacts of climate change have shown that the resilience of our socioeconomic systems highly depends on healthy natural environments and ecosystems. Business-as-usual practices that involve high greenhouse gas emissions and put great pressure on biodiversity can no longer be an option for the future. In this context, understanding and harnessing the potential of the water-energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) nexus is key to reconciling these often-competing objectives and attaining sustainable development.
About Water Action Decade and the Dushanbe Water Process
In December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly declared the period 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (hereinafter Water Action Decade), which aims at supporting sustainable development and integrated management of water resources, while promoting cooperation and partnerships to support achieving internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. On 22 March 2018, the United Nations Secretary General’s Plan for the Water Action Decade was released during a High-Level Launch Event. The plan outlines current activities and capabilities of the UN system and international organisations and the operational setup envisaged to support Member States in the implementation of the Water Action Decade.
In this connection, the Government of Tajikistan, committed to continue providing a platform for policy dialogue, partnership and action at the global, regional and national level, is organising, with the support of the United Nations and other partners, high-level international conferences throughout the Water Action Decade. This series of events constitutes the so-called “Dushanbe Water Process”. As part of this process, the First High-level International Conference on the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028 (First Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference) was held in Dushanbe on 20-21 June 2018.
Target Group
The Conference is multi-stakeholder in nature and will bring together different groups and actors involved in the implementation of water-related goals and targets.
The Conference will gather high-level representatives of the UN member states, UN institutions, international and regional organisations, international financial institutions, businesses, river basin authorities, local governments, non-governmental organisations, civil society, academia and media. To provide an opportunity for the promotion of integrated approaches and partnerships, participation of representatives from different sectors out of water box is encouraged.
